Off the Clock Comic Contest
Help us test our new contest system by voting in the Champions "Off-the-Clock" comic contest!
Champions are busy clashing on the battlefield every day, vying for victory and glory. But what happens when champions are off-the-clock? Swain interrupted in the middle of an important strategy meeting? Lux at cheerleading practice? Cho'Gath in the Cho'Bath? Whatever's happening, you're choosing the winners of our newest comic contest! Here are the details:
Challenge: Create an original League of Legends comic that shows what champions are doing when they're not battling on the Fields of Justice.
The rules:
- Be LoL-inspired: in addition to making us lol heartily, your comic must have a clear League of Legends theme
- Use the template: we're going to be sticklers and insist that your comic is one page and created using our template file
- Technical format: JPG and PNG formats only
- Don't cheat: these contests are about creativity, so tracing outdated online comics won't win you points; submit your original work, created in the contest timeframe, or face the wrath of our elite team of anti-fraud ninjas
- Keep it clean: we all enjoy a dirty joke, but for equal-opportunity fanfare and celebration, these comics need to be age-appropriate for the youngest summoners and should follow the Summoner's Code
- Be colorful: we're drawn to bright colors, so the more the better
- English only pls: it's a beta, so submissions need to be in English - you can log in with either your NA, EUW or EUNE account to enter or vote

Comment is below threshold ( show ) Not quite sure about this.... Great idea and epic prizes but, I feel as though people who are voting, will vote on the front page entries, and won't go browsing through the hundreds of entries... so the later entrants won't get the same advertising and views as the early ones...
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) The entries will be presented in random order for voting to ensure all entries have equal chance of being seen.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) If they are presented at random with absolutely no rhythm, what ensures that maybe one entry will never be on the front page and ALWAYS lands up in the back somewhere? How do you know that all entries will get a fair view from this?
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Honestly, randomization is the best they can do.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) @ NATHANUS MAXIMUS: You needn't worry, it was mentioned that it wouldn't be "pure random", Riot has some smart people I'm sure they can work something out to ensure an even a fair showing. While possibly not the best option, off the top of my head they could simply implement a weighting so that less seen entries are more likely to get picked for the more seen pages. Over simplifying: We roll a dice, 1-3 I win, 4-6 you win. If I win my chances decrease to 1-2, while yours increase to 3-6. It self balances so on average we'll still have a 50% win rate, but it removes much of the random element and we're less likely to see extreme cases where you win 10/10 rolls (or never reaching the front page as the case may be).
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) @Nathanus Remember HotorNot.com? All they have to do is show one "random" Entry, you vote on it, and then they show you another entry. Easy-peasy to track view stats and everything. Then they can show the lesser viewed ones if they so desire.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) It's a little more than simply randomizing *everything*. To put it simply, we had this concern in mind since the start and there are measures in place to prevent entries from soaking up all the views while others are left unseen :)
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Greetings! Even distribution and content consumption were the primary focus points when developing the voting experience, as everyone deserves a fair shake. No player will have an unfair advantage over another and can submit at any time until 12:00 AM PST on March 21st. We are confident in the sorting strategy, and are super excited to see these awesome comics coming in!
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) They are not "pure" random, rather they are randomized in a way to ensure even distribution of visibility. Perhaps I can get the engineer to provide more details.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) The randomization was designed specifically to distribute eyeballs onto entries fairly evenly. It's not a simple random. This is absolutely something that was taken into consideration.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) First!
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) No such thing. ;-)
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Wow i think I could acctully win this with the ideas I have in mind . . . well I hope so
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Dooo eeeeeet.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Aww... too bad I have no talent in art whatsoever lol... Could we see a writing contest eventually? Like to invent a background for a new champ or to explore and invent a story about how our favourite champ came to the League?? It would really be awesome Riot ;)
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) THAT IS SO PERFECT. I'm 13 and I've been looking for logic-based competitions, but since there are people that submit for these contests that are in their twenties and beyond, I would be rather screwed. :P However, one thing that I KNOW is that you don't need five extra years of schooling to write well. I swear, that is so perfect... Somebody go grab a Riot employee. :D
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Interesting comment section format. Kinda wish you guys'd update the real forums though. :| GLHF all.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) I don't think this competition has been a positive experience so far for a lot of artists including myself. Almost everyone has been down voted by other's friends or trolls and I highly doubt many league players who have nothing to do with this contest are going to vote at all, let alone through the random selection. If you want to improve this community you need to make it positive and thus remove the negativity by removing the negative voting system (if someone doesn't like the comic why not just leave it? you can view votes in the page source as someone else pointed out). Also, having the random comics displayed by default isn't going to stop people simply changing to best and starting their search there. I don't care about winning, I'd just like to lose fair and square.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) A lot of players that did not enter the contest are both voting and making comments. If we see mass down votes or abusive voting behavior, we will take action. This is a beta, so we are watching for abuse of the system.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) So there wasn't any abusive voting behavior? What about almost 90% of artworks having negative score? It's just not sane. I don't believe a proper community would vote down almost every entry.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) I bet this is a lot smoother to sort out. Certainly results in less pages of people yelling at Ms. Pudding!
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) We've certainly taken in all the feedback and were hoping to give you guys a way to have a truly "community voted" contest for awhile. This should be a fun experiment ^_^
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) That is certainly a goal.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) I wonder if all accounts show summoner icons.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Looks like some are missing
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Still working out some kinks with some icons but they will all display once its sorted out.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) I have a question: If I'm not very good at using photoshop, could i print out the template and draw the comic? Then send a pic of it to Riot?.. or does it have to be done on the computer? Thank you for any replies: - Learn to Feed ME
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Many comic artists begin their illustrations on paper, then scan it in and make finishing touches or even color it on the computer. Something to watch out for when you're doing this is the quality of your colors and lines, as these tend to deteriorate in the scanning process. :)
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Thank you for the reply, I guess I could try my hand at it with drawing, but I'm not sure about the touching up process. Better get my ideas going! Before I know it, it will be turn in time!
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Go now! NOW! Stop reading! Go draw something!
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) wtf 2 days to create a comic????
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) The contest is open until March 21st at midnight pacific time. You can BEGIN submitting comics two days from now.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) i like the idea of a contest where it's completely judged by the community, but i also feel like people will just vote for comics with their favorite champs in it or that are drawn by their friends. in my opinion, future contests should be judged by the riot staff, but also have one or two community-voted winners as well so that everyone can feel they had a say in the matter? just my 2 cents
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) That is how we have done it in the past, however, we want to see what the community is capable of. This is very much an experiment that we hope to learn a lot from and we will be listening carefully for feedback.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) i also think that maybe in the future you could have different categories, such as best drawn, or best concept. that way people that aren't at the industrial level of art still have a chance to win something if their idea was good enough. a lot of people were really discouraged in the digi-art contest because even though their art was really awesome, it wasn't quite as good as some of the winners, despite their concepts being better. thanks for responding :3
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) What level do summoners need to be to vote for best comic? These are great prizes so I feel that everyone's smurf accounts... AHEM FRIENDS will be trying to make votes at your local library and school computers.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) It's nice to see 27 other people downvoting my art :) I know this is only a beta, but better quality and planning needs to be ensured into the way voting works because: a) Nobody bothers to look through the piles of 'RANDOM' drawings and would, without doubt, go to the 'BEST' section and start their voting there. (Even though Xin It To Win It said it provides equal distribution of views, in the end, no one would bother to vote for random comics. They would look at the best comics.) b) The downvoting button is troll heaven. During Early Voting, most people (as in friends of other artists or trolls in general) would downvote every other comic besides their friends' or just every comic. The downvote button feels like a 'CLICK HERE TO SLAP THE AUTHOR IN THE FACE' rather than a 'CLICK HERE TO DISLIKE' button. If the community doesn't like it, they could just ignore it. c) Some works, although good, are not regarding the rules of 'keeping it clean'. These works have just enough eight as anyone else's to be put up, though, but abide the rules like everyone does. And the comic templates of some aren't the same. I state again, abide the rules like everyone does. I'm not mad at anyone or anything, but I'd like a fair competition next time :) - Klamorre and practically everyone else on here.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) We decided to allow the old template because there was such a large number of entries that used it. As for comics that are not 'keeping it clean,' we deleted comics that were 18+ crude or had bad language, just because something is sexual, does not make it pornographic. Ultimately the community voting decides if a comic should be a winner.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) The community does decide on which comic should be a winner, I can agree with you on that, but does the community ACTUALLY think and decide rationally on which comic should be a loser? Tracking downvotes and casts of upvotes is not what everyone here is complaining about. Nobody would care if we announced the 20 top Summoners withe most downvotes, action should be taken. The trolls on here clicking downvote on a spree need to be banned or their downvotes deleted. Even though it is not right to ban a player for expressing opinion, I highly doubt a player could hate 488 + pieces of art.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) 100% correct; however, if they change even just one thing with all you mentioned it should be the voting system or eliminate the down voting. It absolutely is troll heaven or whoever has more friends wins. I also agree with the rules being broken. They may have deleted some, but they are still not upholding it to the letter of their rules. They need to leave no question about what's accepted and not. I believe they used the words 'age appropriate'...well none of these that have sexual references are age appropriate or family friendly for the ages of the youngest contestants. They need to abide their own rules and be willing to do the hard thing and get rid of artwork that may be 'popular' even if it's wrong. They are making a bad compromise otherwise.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) I think the voting system is wrong. Why negative feedback? That provides that? I think who likes a comic that vote, and that's it. With negative feedback can do many tricks and is always the same, the person who has more friends/contacts win, it will receive more votes, and in turn, those same friends will vote negative to rest. I think the jury should have been Riot, if it depends on how many friends you have to win is not fair.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Totally right. The winner is not really better with art or more humorous, just has more 'friends' or contacts that are willing to vote them up and others down all day.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) It's hard to agree with this when the top entries are so consistently solid, as they are right now. Granted, taste is pretty subjective, but looking at the current leaderboard, maybe pure democracy IS effective after all :)
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) My main criticism is that they need to eliminate the down-vote capability. If you don't like/don't want to vote for a comic/art work ignore it and move to the next one. Also, I'm not sure that 'advertising' your art should be acceptable. It basically becomes whoever is more popular wins. Not who has better art or a funnier joke. This contest is simply a troll popularity contest.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Wowww ... The contest right now is about who will get the most Downvotes ... Thats just wrong ... Its no longer a Art contest. ;( Could a Rioter tell us what's up with the downvote thing ... Are you going to keep it up ?
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) This people only vote like a troll... 90% of sumbitions are in negative, so bad, I that is a big fail. Is so sad, all participant have done a work with his/my time and the ppl just trolling... Please, in the next contest, don't activate the negative feedback, it doesn't work.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) I agree with you, negative feedback is so stupid :( And the " sort by best" wasn't relevant at the openning. It should have been shown only during the final voting phase, in my opinion...
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) haha it's like when your comic hits -1 it falls into some kind of abbys. I saw how 2 of my 3 submissions slowly drowned like that unable to defend against the uncontrollable waves of downvotes. I was all like "No stay with me, just breathe slowly man, you'll make it" but they said "Tell my kids and wife that i love them". I hope at least the last one will stay on the surface until the voting "ocean" ends.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) We are looking into ways to fix this negative experience. The last thing we want is to creat pain and anxiety for all the artists that made these great comics.
-
0 childrenComment is below threshold ( show ) Almost a bit late for that. The posts in general showed a lot of folks were very upset and discouraged by this whole experience. This contest is to blame for that. The people down voting the comics was not an issue really, I mean you give a dog a bone and he will chew it. The contest set up is 100% to blame, it allowed for people who just simply wanted to have a good time and share some art to be ridiculed and insulted. Riot is concerned about toxic environments yet they basically set one up in this contest. No disrespect meant at all as I still love this company and game however I did lose a lot of respect for you all, it was clear that this voting was toxic after the 1st day and nothing was done to correct it, in fact it was actually made even worse.
